Building a Community and Wellness Center is vital to support the staff who have dedicated themselves to serving the remote communities surrounding Okhaldhunga Hospital.  The Center will provide these employees with a place to gather, engage with others, and stay physically and mentally healthy.  In return, the hospital gains their loyalty as long-term team members.  When the Center is complete, it will be their area for fitness, sport, community and education.  It will be a space of pride and gathering for the people who call Okhaldhunga their place of work and home!

- The responsibility of finance management will be held jointly by MMT, managing the project on the ground in Nepal, and by MMI board members in the U.S.
- 100% of MMI project funds will be used toward building the Community and Wellness Center.  MMT has personal and private funding.
- Estimates are agreed upon before work begins, and payments are made directly to the contractor after project completion.

Dramatic foothill terrain makes land development costly
- Steep multi-terraced land must be reduced to two functional terraces.
- Substantial retaining wall structures are required to withstand the extreme grade and heavy rains of Nepal’s monsoon season.

Challenges in Construction Crew Staffing and Material Sourcing
- The remote location requires that the contractor and building crew remain on the project for weeks to months at a time.  Stipends for lodging and food are often required.
- Supplies are shipped from either the Terai (flatland on the India border) or the Kathmandu Valley.  Building supplies require one to two full days for transport and must be specially packed for the rough and hazardous travel.
