Building up campus-type infrastructure that supports the long-term retention of skilled clinicians to maintain consistent and stable care to this remote district.  

Nepal is a landlocked South Asian country high in the Himalayas.  It is bordered by Tibetan China to the north and India to the south, east and west.  

Nepal's challenging Himalayan landscape results in its population of 30 million people being compressed into only 20% of its landmass.

A further challenge caused by this treacherous yet livable terrain is that it is fractured by sheer mountain cliffs, dramatically isolating communities from each other.

75% of Nepal's population is considered rural, meaning the vast majority of 22.5 million people live in underdeveloped isolation, while only 7.5 million citizens live in developing cities.

Development in these rural regions is cost and access prohibitive, making advancements of all types painstakingly slow and expensive.

Nepal faces these same tough challenges in rural healthcare, driving the creation of MMT and MMI—see the story below.

Nepal's ruggedly isolating terrain creates what can feel like insurmountable challenges to the access and advancement of healthcare for the vast majority of its people.  Physical isolation creates a multifaceted web of obstacles that remote hospitals are forced to navigate in order to maintain—and even more so, to advance—their level of care.  One major obstacle faced by medical staff working long-term in these areas, is maintaining their knowledge and skill base through quality education.  A second challenge that hospitals struggle with administratively, is the recruitment and retention of highly skilled medical providers (e.g., surgeons and medical specialists) who are typically from out of the area..  Just as college campuses meet life needs for displaced students, the hospital must provide a campus-type environment for non-local clinicians as well, providing for their needs while they serve in areas of severe isolation. Having strong support like this can make all the difference in retaining long-term specialist.  

Moetus Medical Training (MMT) has partnered with Okhaldhunga Community Hospital (OCH), a remote 50 bed hospital in the foothill region of Mt. Everest, Nepal.

The Project Goal: Our goal is to provide Okhaldhunga Community Hospital with the infrastructure needed to retain their specialty staff long-term.  This will allow the hospital to offer higher-level care that is stable and consistent.  

Okhaldhunga Hospital, Development Areas:  
This isolated hospital lacks the campus environment required for meeting the social and community needs of its out-of-area specialists.

Okhaldhunga Hospital: The hospital is well equipped with facilities that support advanced health procedures.  The greatest hurdle, however, is the long-term retention of the medical specialists needed to utilize these resources to their full potential.  

The Challenge of Living in a Remote 'Village": - Therefore, out-of-area staff do not have their basic needs for community, holistic wellbeing, and education met locally.  
-These professionals therefore come for short-term shifts, leaving large inconsistencies in coverage.  

The Project:  The development of a Community and Wellness Center in association with
Okhaldhunga Community Hospital (OCH).
- The center will provide an open gathering area with kitchen facility, an outdoor "green area", multi-purpose break-out rooms equipped with computers and internet, a covered sport field, a weight lifting gym, and an open exercise area. This will allow for space to gather and develop "Life and Community".  

Partnership for Sustainable Change: To ensure longevity and sustainable change, MMT and OCH have researched root causes and agree upon the core needs that drive this project.  Both parties are committed  to the building process and its success upon completion.
